Wha to Look
Baby Shoes » What to look for in a first shoe
Assess whether the instep (the prominent arched middle section of the foot between the ankle and the toes) is suitable for your child.
Ensure that there is sufficient room for the toes to fan out and wriggle freely without touching the tip of the shoe.
The shoes should fit at the heel, holding the foot snugly.
First shoes should either be completely lat or have a very low heel.
The sole should be flexible for easy movement, as well as light and non-slip.
The fastening should be adjust-able and hold the foot firmly in place.
The part of the shoe above the sole, (the upper), should have no hard seams or stitching as these may rub against the foot and cause bruising and pain.
The type of shoe you buy will be determined by when and where it is to be worn. Leather uppers are best for shoes that are worn often as leather soon moulds to the shape of the child's feet. Plastic or canvas shoes are okay for occasional use as playwear.
Finally, get your child to try on the shoes and walk around in them. Look out for signs that show that the shoes pinch or slip, or if he is uncomfortable in them.
