Building parent-child relationship

Honest, respectful and nurturing parent-child relationship is essential to children's security, self-confidence and learning. The importance of warm, positive relationship between children and adults is strongly emphasised for children from birth.
How is parent-child relationship built?
A relationship is built as a result of constant interaction between two people being together and doing things together over a period of time. Being together brings about understanding of each other. During that interaction process, each becomes more familiar and more comfortable with the other and this allows the parent and the child to experience pleasure in each other's presence.
As a result of past experiences of being together, a child and her parents have certain expectations of each other when they are together. The child would be more secure if she knows they are available and supportive. The parents, in turn, would be more aware of the child's needs and the kind of support to provide based on the situation the child is in. Parent-child relationship is built when we become more sensitive and responsive to the needs of the child.
Does parent-child relationship really matter?
Why is parent-child relationship important? Parent-child relationship is important because it helps the child develop self-confidence, social skills and competence. This development of self-confidence is possible because the child is very much aware of the supportive role of the parents in managing her needs. Young children's relationship with parents has been described in terms of attachment. Children build secure attachment with parents who are sensitive and responsive. This supportive role that parents play offers the child a secure base from which to explore her environment. This secure attachment arises from being there when your child needs you, trusting that you will be there to support and encourage him.
Infants form attachment with the main caregiver, usually the parents, over a period of time of consistent and positive interaction.
General principles in building parent-child relationships
Make relationship with children a high priority
Early parent-child relationship makes a difference in the lives of children. Today, many parents are faced with the dilemma of busy schedules leaving them very little time to be with the children. Make building relationship with your child a priority. Household chores can afford to take a backstage. The early years are your child's growing and developing years that will set the tone for his future development. Parents should certainly be part of this stage of development of the child.
