Speech and Language Therapy » Fluency
This can be present in the form of difficulties with oral movement or swallowing.
Children develop at their own pace. However, it is important to remember that they may not out-grow their communication difficulties. If you are in doubt, seek professional advice.
When a child is assessed by a Speech & Language Therapist, the following areas are considered:
  • Does the child have the prerequisite skills for speech development? The essential skills include play skills, and visual and auditory discrimination.
  • What are the child's speech sound production (articulation) in relation to age norms?
  • How is his comprehension?
  • How does his language function:
  • When telling stories or listening to them, do the words make sense?
  • Do the choice of words and structures clarify or obscure meaning?
