Age What baby is learning What you can do to help
6 mths Beginning to sit alone
Play a game where you hold his hands and pull him up to a sitting position. Sit him on the floor and surround him with cushions and pillows. Find a laundry basket and put him in it, supported by pillows.
9 mths Beginning to crawl
Protect his knees with cotton trousers or dungarees. Let him have plenty of space to practice. Put objects just out of his reach to encourage him to move towards them.
10-12 mths Standing & Cruising
Let him stand with no shoes - he needs to have bare feet to learn balance. Move dangerous furniture with sharp corners. Don't panic when he falls - this will only upset him. Look out for objects he can now reach like table lamps or electric cords.
15 mths Taking her first steps
Arrange the furniture so he can move from one piece to another, letting go for short steps. Remember he will still want to be carried most of the time when you are out as he finds it tiring to walk very far. Give him a ball or a cart to encourage his walking.
18 mths - 2 yrs Throwing & catching, running, climbing and balancing
Play throwing games with balls and balloons. Enjoy acrobatics -throwing him on your bed, in the air or on a big pile of cushions and pillows. Using seesaws, climbing frames and swings to get a sense of movement, balance and co-ordination.
2-3 yrs Testing his physical capabilities
Practice climbing small ladders - at the playground, on a bunk bed or the stepladder. Play games together like hopscotch or skipping. Play running and jumping games together. Let him have some freedom and test his own limits.
