Introduction:

Crying is a normal event in the lives of all babies. When a baby comes out of the womb the first thing to do is crying. By the first cry he will take some air in to the lungs for the first time in their life. After delivery if the baby does not cry then it should be initiated by slightly pinching or gently strocking the feet. From this it is clear that the healthy baby should cry and it is a normal physiological event , still some times it can upset the mother or family members.

We all know that a baby can’t tell his needs or troubles in words. The only way for him to communicate with others is by crying. Babies show some other signs like feet kicking, hand waving and head turning etc. But the best way to take the attention of others is by crying.

Excessive crying may not have a firm definition because the crying habit changes from baby to baby and some babies can be calmed easily but some are difficult to sooth. If crying is distressing for the mother and home nurse it can be called excessive. Many a times baby become quiet by giving breast milk or by carrying with a gentle rocking. Sudden onset of excessive crying means baby is distressed and needs attention. The causes of crying extends from simple reasons to life threatening conditions. Hence crying of a baby should not be ignored. (more…)

The first set of teeth, or milk-teeth as they are called, are twenty in number; they usually appear in pairs, and those of the lower jaw generally precede the corresponding ones of the upper. The first of the milk-teeth is generally cut about the sixth or seventh month, and the last of the set at various periods from the twentieth to the thirtieth months. Thus the whole period occupied by the first dentition may be estimated at from a year and a half to two years. The process varies, however, in different individuals, both as to its whole duration, and as to the periods and order in which the teeth make their appearance. It is unnecessary, however, to add more upon this point.

Their developement is a natural process. It is too frequently, however, rendered a painful and difficult one, by errors in the management of the regimen and health of the infant, previously to the coming of the teeth, and during the process itself.

Thus, chiefly in consequence of injudicious management, it is made the most critical period of childhood. Not that I believe the extent of mortality fairly traceable to it, is by any means so great as has been stated; for it is rated as high as one sixth of all the children who undergo it. Still, no one doubts that first dentition is frequently a period of great danger to the infant. It therefore becomes a very important question to an anxious and affectionate mother, how the dangers and difficulties of teething can in any degree be diminished, or, if possible, altogether prevented. A few hints upon this subject, then, may be useful. I shall consider, first, the management of the infant, when teething is accomplished without difficulty; and, secondly, the management of the infant when it is attended with difficulty.

From the first moment the infant is applied to the breast, it must be nursed upon a certain plan. This is necessary to the well-doing of the child, and will contribute essentially to preserve the health of the parent, who will thus be rendered a good nurse, and her duty at the same time will become a pleasure.

This implies, however, a careful attention on the part of the mother to her own health; for that of her child is essentially dependent upon it. Healthy, nourishing, and digestible milk can be procured only from a healthy parent; and it is against common sense to expect that, if a mother impairs her health and digestion by improper diet, neglect of exercise, and impure air, she can, nevertheless, provide as wholesome and uncontaminated a fluid for her child, as if she were diligently attentive to these important points. Every instance of indisposition in the nurse is liable to affect the infant.

And this leads me to observe, that it is a common mistake to suppose that, because a woman is nursing, she ought therefore to live very fully, and to add an allowance of wine, porter, or other fermented liquor, to her usual diet. The only result of this plan is, to cause an unnatural degree of fulness in the system, which places the nurse on the brink of disease, and which of itself frequently puts a stop to the secretion of the milk, instead of increasing it. The right plan of proceeding is plain enough; only let attention be paid to the ordinary laws of health, and the mother, if she have a sound constitution, will make a better nurse than by any foolish deviation founded on ignorance and caprice.

Buying baby clothes for you new little one might seem like an easy task . . . until you get into the store and see the incredible range of clothing there is! Baby clothes are a big business and that means you have more options than you can shake a stick at. So, which clothes do you go with? Which ones does your newborn really need? This article will help you sort all this out so you can buy the right layette and get on with enjoying your baby.

Newborns don’t need much clothing, really. They aren’t able to crawl around and get dirty yet, so most of the time you will only be dealing with spit up and leaky diapers. Baby clothes that are soft and comfortable are your first priority and after that, you can worry about durability. The fact of the matter is that babies grow so quickly that they usually only wear their cute little outfits for a month or two before they are on to the next size!

Keeping this in mind, you will want to buy slightly larger baby clothes than your infant needs so he can grow into them. The sizes given on baby clothes are often misleading, there are plenty of outfits that say 12 months and fit a two year old, while some that are supposed to be for six months are already too small for your newborn! The best way to be sure of the fit is to hold the outfit up to the baby’s back and stretch the legs down to see if the length is correct.

Most baby clothing is pretty soft and comfy, but you can double check by running your hand inside the sleepers and jumpers and see if you feel any hard seams or other uncomfortable bits. You also should check to see if the clothing is flame retardant. Although this is the law in many countries, occasionally items come in that are not up to the standards and since this is a safety issue, you should make sure that the clothing you buy is not flammable.

With newborns, you need mostly sleepwear and onesies. Onesies are those little one piece jumpsuits without legs that button in the crotch. They are ideal for hot days when you would rather leave your infant with nothing on. They also serve under regular pajamas to keep the baby extra warm on cold nights. These are possibly the most useful baby clothes in existence, so make sure you get at least six or seven.

Sleepers will also be very handy in these first few months. As will bibs, to keep spit up from dirtying every outfit the baby has in a couple of hours! With just these baby clothes items, you can easily keep your infant clothed for his first quarter year or more.

Although there are a multitude of adorable dresses and coveralls for newborns, you really only need a couple of these for special occasions. They are usually very difficult to put on a newborn and aren’t really necessary.

Buying baby clothes can be a bit intimidating, but if you remember that old saying “less is more” you will be on the right track. There is plenty of time to buy cute outfits for your child once he slows down the growth and can actually wear an outfit for more than a few weeks! For now, go with the minimum and enjoy the easiness of it all!

When the time comes to start the baby on baby food, some people prefer to make their own. If you decide to make your own baby food, storage may be a challenge, as you want to make it worth making more than a serving or two at a time. One way to store the food simply is to take the pureed fruit or vegetable and fill ice cube trays and freeze. Once it’s frozen, pop the cubes out and store them in a zip storage bag. Then, each cube is about a beginner serving. They thaw quickly for serving.

It’s good to start a baby on one new food at a time, to help recognize any possible food allergies. It’s also a good idea to start the baby on vegetable before starting them on fruit. This way they don’t develop a sweet tooth any sooner than necessary. Once they are eating the veggies well, start introducing the fruits, also one at a time.

When your baby’s tummy is upset, it’s often hard to tell what’s causing the problem. If you notice a regular pattern, and you are nursing, it could be something you’re eating. Keep track of your meals (what you eat and when) and make note of when the baby spits up. Sometimes it’ll be just normal spit up from gas, sometimes it may be something else.

One of my children never spit up, the other kept spitting up all the time. Then I discovered, by accident, that my iron supplements were the problem. I forgot to take them for a couple days, when I was visiting family, and my son didn’t spit up while we were gone. We got home, he started spitting up again. I didn’t make the connection at first, but later remembered my father-in-law saying that he couldn’t take vitamins with iron in it. I stopped taking them, and he quit spitting up.

If you decide to nurse your baby, you’re in for a lot of changes, and some challenges, but a wonderful experience. Some babies take it to it right off, and others will take a little time to adjust. If it doesn’t happen right away, and you really want to nurse, don’t give up. Try different positions, like cradled in front of your, or beside you “football style”, with the babies feet beside you.

You may get sore occasionally, but sometimes just changing the angle will allow the sore place a chance to rest. There are medications that can be used, but always check with your doctor first. One thing I found that helps is a drop of baby teething ointment. It will numb it a little, as well as provide some protection. Use it right after your baby is done nursing, and wipe any that is left over before they nurse, so they don’t get too much.

You’re exhausted, moody and can’t even think straight! Sound familiar? Most parents suffer from sleep deprivation at some point. Even those who are lucky enough to have babies who are good sleepers eventually have to deal with getting their toddlers to stay in bed.

To make matters worst there is so much conflicting information as to how and when we should get our babies to sleep through the night. It’s enough to leave a new parent wondering what’s the right thing to do?

Here are a few tips:

Listen to your instincts. Remember you know your baby best. Take all the advice you can get (including this one) as what it is, “advice”. Never let it replace your own personal judgment. You know your baby best and only YOU know what’s really right for him. If it feels right to rock your baby to sleep, then do it. If it feels right to bring your baby into bed with you then do it.

Many babies will start teething at about 6 months. The process of their baby teeth working their way out of baby’s gums can be a very painful process for your little one. Here are a few ideas to easy baby’s pain.Use your clean, wet finger to massage baby’s gums. You can also use a cool teaspoon to do the same.

Get some teething rings for baby to chew on. Store them in the refrigerator to keep them cold. This will temporarily numb the pain for your child as she chews on the ring. The chewing will also speed up the process of the teeth working their way though the gums.

You can also give your baby a cold, wet washcloth to chew on.

Talk to your pediatrician about any numbing gels or pain medication if the methods above are not enough to make her comfortable.

As a new mom, you may be wondering when you should start transitioning your baby from breast milk or formula to solid foods.

Most babies are ready somewhere between 4 to 6 months. Watch your baby for signs that she is ready to try her first solid food. Is she paying close attention to you when you are eating? Is she making chewing motions when she sees you eat? Then She may be ready for her first taste of solid food.

You want to introduce her to rice cereal first. Prepare a thin cereal with breast milk or formula. Mix it in a small bowl and feed it to baby with a small baby spoon. Be prepared for a mess as baby tries to figure out if she likes the cereal and gets used to the texture.

If your baby refuses to eat, just give her a few days and try again. Eventually she will get the hang of it and enjoy her cereal. Start increasing the thickness of the cereal with each meal.
